The night before you enter the working world, you are sleepless, you nervous and you keep tossing and turning on your bed.
You keep looking over and checking your clock, your phone for the 9778th times. You keep thinking if you really learned anything from your college which is applicable to your new job or would you just turn out to be Patrick star.
“Help me!” – your brain scream and then you start to panic and sweat a little.
I have been there. I graduated from the university with a degree in software engineering. A day before I started with my life as a working adult, I kept questioning myself. Am I dumb? Are they going to fire me once they find out that I know nothing? Do I even know how to code? Am I even a legit programmer?
After 6 years of working experience and one big transfer, and a promotion later, I am here to let you know that you will be fine! Here are my three tips to conquering your career as a fresh graduate.
1. Relax. Baby steps
You have no reason to panic or be worried. When a company hires you as a fresh graduate, they understand that you might not be 110% plug and play. You will be assigned with a senior colleague or team leader who will guide you and mentor you about your task and what is expected from you. They are there to guide you for the first 6 months.
2. Be confident but do not be an egoistic jerk.
Stand tall, talk confidently and be open to learn. Have the attitude of “I am teachable and I am a learner!” Change your mind-set from “I am a student” to “I am a working professional” But do not act like you know it all! Nobody likes a fresh graduate who acts like he / she knows it all!
3. Never stop learning.
The best way to improve yourself, your skills and knowledge is to adopt the attitude of continuous leaner. You will never learn enough. Knowledge is power! Learn and keep learning. With you discipline, good attitude and perseverance you’ll definitely achieve your career goals.
Voila! Hopefully, these three steps can assist you in stepping into the working world confidently! Here’s to another new chapter of your life!
